Butterwort (Pinguicula)

  • Sold By: Carlton Carnivores

This member of the "Yucca do" group still has yet to really be associated with a particular species, partly as it can be somewhat difficult to bloom (I have yet to see flowers myself). However, it is clearly a part of the esseriana complex, and makes up for lack of flowers in its unusual and beautiful foliage. Plants tend to grow in summer as mounded rosettes up to around 1.5" in diameter with thick rounded leaves with heavily incurved tips that pile on top of each other. Under good lighting the leaves will shift from green to a brilliant pink, and the curled edges tint white. Winter rosettes shrink significantly and form very succulent, delicate piles of green leaves.

Available plants are betwen 0.5-1.25" in diameter.

Plants are shipped bare-root wrapped in a moist paper towel, via USPS Priority mail; I typically ship Monday-Wednesday to avoid weekend hold-overs. US shipping only. Many plants are grown in high humidity conditions and may require acclimation, unless otherwise noted. If you are expecting weather that may be detrimental to the plants if shipped, please message me upon making your order! Shipping cost includes heat pack for winter conditions. If there are issues with the plants upon arrival, please contact me within 48 hours of receipt.

One of the most sought after Mexican butterworts, this gorgeous species develops rosettes of almost triangular leaves with rounded, incurved tips up to 2" in diameter (sometimes more). the leaves themselves are bright green in the background, but with good lighting can flush a deep grape purple, particularly on the undersides of the leaf edges. Flowers are up to an inch across and have broad, rounded petals, and open a solid deep, electric violet that can lighten to a brilliant grape purple with age. Winter rosettes shrink significantly, and form as overlapping shingles of hairy, succulent leaves.

Available plants are between 0.75-1.5" in diameter.

A classic and easy to grow plant that may or may not go through a winter phase depending on conditions; this hybrid can reach over 4" in diameter in some cases (average around 2.5"), with broad round leaves that fold heavily to form an angular, almost diamond-shaped profile, and in good lighting they readily blush pinkish throughout. Plants in early winter typically will send up one to several large, pale pinkish-lavender flowers with teardrop shaped petals and a whitish center patch.

Available plants are 1-2" in diameter.

This is a relatively compact hybrid that develops rosettes of overlapping leaves up to around 2 inches in diameter, the leaves broadly ovular with curled edges and bright green, though under strong light the tentacles and leaf edges can flush purple. Flowers are composed of 5 roughly teardrop-shaped petals and open a rich electric violet mottled with white markings, before aging to a lilac-pink color. This plant propagates rapidly, dividing often after blooming and winter leaves fall apart with ease, each turning into a new plant if detached.

Available plants are semi-mature, around 1 inch in diameter. Winter-phase plants are smaller and more compact.

While I am suspicious of this being a hybrid and not simply a pure hemiepiphytica form, either way it is a beautiful plant. Rosettes can reach up to 4" or more in diameter (though 2-3" is average), with arching, curled-edge leaves that readily blush in shades of pink and red in good light. Typically in winter season, they may put up one to several large, brilliantly hot pink flowers with slender petals and a white palate spot in the middle.

Available plants are 1-1.75" in diamter.

This select clone is similar in appearances overall to Clone B, but with mild differences in flower form. Rosettes grow up to 2.5" in diameter, arching and with curled edges and bright green with occasional red bases or leaf edges. The flowers sport the more angular petals of emarginata, and mildly serrated edges, and sport a light lavender background marked in darker bleeding violet veins, darkest on the top petals, and with the classic ANPA A deep violet spots near the flower center.

Available plants are around 0.75-1.5" in diameter.

The first select clone of this homemade hybrid, developing rosettes up to 2" in diameter with bright green ovular leaves that occasionally develop red blushing at their bases. The flowers are odd, with angular, mildly serrated petals that bear the faintest hints of violet veins and the bright purple central spots of the ANPA A parent on a white background.

Available plants are approximately 1" in diameter.

This is a small but spectacular Mexican butterwort that is particularly suitable for beginners because it does not experience changes in growth habit or conditions through the year. Rosettes of ovular leaves fold downward as their edges fold inward, propping the plant up above its roots, colors of green contrasted by red centers and lining along the leaf edges in good light. Once established plants mature at around 1-1.5" in diameter, rarely up to 2", and may flower nearly constantly with tiny half-inch blooms that sport serrated white petals marked in intricate purple veins. Available plants are between 0.5-1" in diameter. Plants are shipped bare-root wrapped in a moist paper towel, via USPS Priority mail; I typically ship Monday-Wednesday to avoid weekend hold-overs. One of my favored select clones, this version of this homemade cross develops rosettes of arching ovular leaves up to 2-3" across in summer (winter rosettes are much smaller) that tend to remain green but can develop reddish bases or leaf edges. The flowers are striking, opening up with mildly serrated petals etched in shocking contrasts of white or light lavender and deep violet, the markings brightest and darkest near the center of the bloom and fading outward while still maintaining the classic venation pattern of the emarginata parent. The flowers tend to pale out as they expand and age, but retain overall the rich contrast. Available plants may be approx. 1-1.5" in diameter in summer growth, a quarter this size in winter phase. Plants are shipped bare-root wrapped in a moist paper towel, via USPS Priority mail; I typically ship Monday-Wednesday to avoid weekend hold-overs. US shipping only. Photo is an example of an adult plant; this cross appears to max out at an average of around 2-3" in diameter, though may get larger in cool, bright conditions. Thick almost succulent leaves bear glands on both sides and have rounded, curled edges and are bright green with a lighter underside. Flowers are as yet unknown, but likely will be small and delicate with a pale pinkish coloration and darker edges. Available plants are young, approx. 0.5-1" in diameter. A rarely offered and highly sought after butterwort, this supposed moranensis form develops rosettes that average around 4" in diameter at full size (often less than an inch in winter phase) with broad semi-ovular leaves that stay bright green in most conditions. The flowers are fairly small, but shockingly colored in bright white with deep violet patches right around the throat.

Available plants are semi-mature, and currently in/exiting winter phase so only 1/2-1" across.

The first release of this homemade cross; 'Huahuapan' develops massive rosettes of broad ovular leaves and loads of electric and deep violet flowers with elegant petals; "ANPA A" is slightly smaller but with flowers that display incredible contrast in pure white and deep purple marks around the throat. An example of what the flowers can look like is shown in the selected "Clone A" in the image.

Currently available plants are young, approximately 1" across.

A mere handful of seed-grown clones currently available; this is a cross between two shockingly beautiful plants (supposedly both forms of moranensis) with a lot of potential. The mother plant averages 3-4" in diameter and makes small but eye-catching flowers that are brilliant white with electric violet highlights around the throat, the pollen parent can reach over 6" across at times and makes large flowers that sport elegantly slender, curving petals and a myriad of light and dark violet shades. Offspring should land somewhere in the middle, around 5" in diameter at full size and with flowers in shades of violet with dark spots near the throat (pictures represent adult siblings to demonstrate expected appearances).

Available plants are around 1.5-2" in diameter.
