Commonly known as the Scurfy Pea, this is a wildflower native to much of the interior US, across the Great Basin and Plains and just into the woodlands to the east. Plants can grow to over 3 feet high in some cases, developing spindly branching bushes of short oblanceolate leaves and numerous stalks at the branch tips sporting sometimes dozens of small, lavender to electric violet pea-like flowers. each flower will develop a pod containing a single seed. Packets contain approximately 20 seeds; may benefit from cold stratification or scarification of the seeds to germinate, or simply patience after sowing. Once considered to be a possible new carnivorous plant group, Proboscidea and its relatives are now relegated to para-carnivorous at best, or more commonly "murderous plants." This species can get large, adult plants measuring several feet across with multiple branches, leaves held on thick petioles and roughly spade-shaped. At the ends of each branch spikes of large, fleshy, 5-lobed flowers form, typically pale pinkish mauve in color with darker spots and a yellow stripe leading into the throat. These flowers also have two-lobed stigmas that move when touched, the lobes folding together to capture pollen or avoid damage. All parts of the plant are covered in tiny, sticky glandular hairs that regularly capture small insects (defense against gnats and aphids) and will attract small assassin bugs that feed on the victims. Pollinated flowers develop unique pods that, when young, can actually be harvested and cooked as a vegetable, but when mature shed their fleshy outer coating and the narrow tips split to form a pair of wickedly sharp hooks used to snag animals and carry them about to disperse seeds (occasionally crippling the animals, and thereby providing the seeds with fertilizer). Native to much of the western US, this is a cold-hardy biennial semi-shrub that lives its first year of life as a spreading rosette of heavily lobed, velcro-texture leaves. In its second year it grows anywhere from 2-5 feet tall, branching heavily and producing at the end of each branch one to three night- to morning-blooming flowers that can be nearly 6 inches across and are brilliantly lemon yellow, with a spray of filiform stigmas sticking out of the middle. These flowers are followed by odd cylindrical pods with the same velcro-like texture as the leaves, and each contain numerous flat blackish seeds. Sowing a handful of seeds two different years can ensure establishment of blooming generations every year. Packets contain approx. 30+ seeds, and require a 2-3 month cold stratification to germinate.
