Oregon Carnivorous Plant Community
The Oregon Carnivorous Plant Community connects growers in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, California, and beyond. We are not an organized society, and possess no management or system of membership. What unites our fellowship is an interest in and passion about these wonderful plants.
Oregon is an unusually dense nexus of community in the carnivorous plant world. Portland has always been a place where unique and intrepid interests can find a home. Carnivorous plant cultivation is no exception, and some of the most experienced and vocal carnivorous plant enthusiasts in the world are attendees to our meeting. With iconic nurseries such as Sarracenia Northwest and Cook’s Carnivorous plants within a few hours of Portland, the hobby has spread healthily throughout the Willamette valley and across the country from Oregon.
The early days of community in Oregon were simple. Cultivation was limited and growers few and far-between. Around the late nineties, the Oregon Carnivorous Plant Society was formed to accommodate the rising number of enthusiasts. A webpage and a system of management was produced, and conference meetings scheduled and held. Unfortunately, the old Society never gained enough speed without modern social media, and its website fell into disuse sometime after 2005.
In 2012, a trio of enthusiasts from Terraforums created a public event for cultivators to attend at the Moon and Sixpence. Since then, membership has blossomed into a thriving family of all sorts of friendly people: herpetologists, orchid growers, tropical fish-keepers, nursery-owners, scientists, vendors, artists of every stripe, and other identities. Oregon now has the largest regular congregation of carnivorous plant growers in the Pacific Northwest.

There is a group meeting the second weekend of every month in Portland, and you are invited! We meet on Sunday every 3rd month of the year, and Saturday on all other months. People start showing up at 3:00 and usually leave by 6:30. The Moon & Sixpence pub and the Columbia River Brewing Company in the Hollywood district are our regular haunts. Check out our listed event on Facebook to join the conversation. We ask that you please make a purchase from our venue so we can continue our great relationship with our local pubs.
We frequently get visitors from across the region. Everyone is welcome. Bring a prized plant if you want for show and tell, and be prepared for a giveaway!
