Sarracenia ‘Deep Throat’
Sarracenia ‘Deep Throat’ is a spectacular hybrid North American pitcher plant crossed by Peter D’Amato of California Carnivores. In the early 1990s, he took a Sarracenia leucophylla ‘Red and White’ and crossed it with S. minor var. okefenokeensis (also known as S. ‘Okee giant’ or ‘Okefenokee Giant’). This hybridization yielded typical, if not especially large intermediaries of S. × excellens (any S. leucophylla x minor hybrid).
Except for a few of the progeny.
S. ‘Deep Throat’ was a standout hybrid with wide pitcher and a huge mouth. Let’s take a closer look, below.
Unique biology of Sarracenia ‘Deep Throat’
Trap characteristics
Sarracenia ‘Deep Throat’ pitchers can grow 21 inches (53 cm) tall. Pitchers emerge from a tapered, red base, where they gradually widen and then suddenly inflate towards the upper most portion. The sideways opening of the mouth expands to 3 inches (8 cm). – All the better to eat you with, my dear.
Pitcher tubes are green and smattered with very fine longitudinal red veins that thicken and branch the higher up you trace them. The upper pitcher area turns a gorgeous shade of brick red and, where you might find the white windows on a typical S. minor, you’ll instead find greenish-yellow spots. These spots are most concentrated on the upper neck and lid of the pitcher.
Other notable characteristics
A gaping mouth, is the most characteristic feature of Sarracenia ‘Deep Throat’. Surrounding the mouth is a curled red lip that dips into a V shape towards the front center of the pitcher to meet the ala (fin running down the front length of the pitcher).
S. ‘Deep Throat’ has a lid wider than it is long. It overhangs the outer edges of the mouth beneath it, and can be held horizontal or more vertical in a yawning-mouth position.
